What is LTL?

LTL (less than truckload) or partial loads are loads that will not fill the complete truck. This could be for small loads or small quantities that can share a vehicle during transportation.

Typically, LTL are between 100 and 20,000 pounds but the upper amount can vary depending on the carrier. LTL freight can vary from pallet loads to small parcels so many shipments can be transported together which may involve them being delivered to a central hub and out to local hubs to be delivered.

LTL loads are suited to a range of vehicles which includes flatbeds, dry vans, refrigerated and even some smaller vehicles like box vans.

Why should you use LTL?

You should use LTL freight if you have a smaller load that you need to be delivered as it may offer better rates than some other delivery services depending on the load volume and item size.

It is also cheaper to share loads than to take the full load and not utilise the whole truck as it reduces the cost for all parties using the truck, and lowers the carbon emissions.

However, you should be aware that as a shared load there are a few disadvantages compared to full truckloads which are they tend to be less secure, take longer to arrive and can have a great risk of damage as they are handled more. To reduce these risks you should protect your load for transit and use crates or pallets.

Do all LTL load boards show rates?

Load boards all vary in terms of what they include and offer which can include whether or not they show the load rates. Many load boards don’t include the rates for the loads on the load board.

The reason many load boards don’t include the rates is due to them wanting to stimulate competition between carriers so that shippers or brokers can get the best possible rates. If the load board displayed the rates it won’t get the same result.

There are some load boards that will help you to decide what to bid or quote for loads as they offer assistance through rate calculators and historical rate information. This can be useful for carriers but can also be helpful to shippers as they can use it to create a benchmark to assess bids or quotes.

Which load board pays the most?

How each load board operates is different but none of them have a big impact on how much a load pays or what the carrier will receive for the load.

The rates for loads are decided in one of two ways, either the poster of the load will set the price and carriers can negotiate the rate or accept the advertised rate.

The second method is that carriers can bid or quote for the load and through this method, the carrier is determining how much they will be paid.

The only impact the load board has on the amount that the load pays is if the load board charges for its services. All load boards are set up differently so you will need to check what the charges are for the load board you are using and how this will impact the amount earned. For example, some load boards are free to access but may charge a fee for loads won; others may charge a monthly subscription and may or may not charge a fee for loads won.

Are there any restrictions around using LTL?

There are some restrictions around LTL freight which are largely around size and weight. In terms of handling the freight, the load should be packaged well to ensure that it is delivered safely and protected in transit.

It is advisable that loads should be palletised or in crates. Most carriers will have a height restriction of 96” or 94” and a width of 94” for loads so that the load can be manoeuvred into the truck easily.

There tends to be a minimum weight of LTL freight which starts at 100 pounds and can go up to 20,000 pounds depending on the LTL provider. Some carriers may also have restrictions on how many pallets they will carry on their loads but this will be up to the carrier or the size of their vehicle.
